What is the book?
The second One Book – One Bozeman book selection is The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship and the Redemptive Power of Music, by acclaimed LA Times columnist Steve Lopez.  This New York Times bestseller tells the story of a friendship between a successful writer and a homeless schizophrenic living on Los Angeles’ dangerous Skid Row. On the surface it’s a hopeless tale of one man trying to make a difference in a vicious cycle of pain and social injustice. But once you dig a little deeper, it’s a true account of perseverance and camaraderie not often found between two disparate people.

Reactions to The Soloist:
From Amazon.com: This is the true story of journalist Steve Lopez’s discovery of Nathaniel Ayers, a former classical bass student at Julliard, playing his heart out on a two-string violin on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Deeply affected by the beauty of Ayers’s music, Lopez took it upon himself to change the prodigy’s life—only to find that their relationship has had a profound change on his own life.

“Lopez is a terrific reporter. The Soloist is poignant, wise, and funny.”
—Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind

“An utterly compelling tale.”
—Pete Earley, author of Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness

“Compelling and gruffly tender…Lopez deserves congratulations for being the one person who did not avert his eyes and walk past the grubby man with the violin.”
—Edward Humes, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist writing for the Los Angeles Times
