What is the book? Kevin Michael Connolly wrote a poignant memoir Double Take about his extraordinary, yet normal upbringing and life to date. Born and raised in Helena, Montana, as a kid Kevin camped in the woods, hung out with friends, graduated from Helena High, and later from Montana State University with a degree in film. He spent a semester studying abroad in New Zealand, traveled the world, and along the way became a two-time X-Game skiing medalist.
Just a normal Montana boy by all accounts. And really, Kevin remains a normal, soon-to-be 25-year old. He’s open and honest, funny and engaging. Handsome and buff, with a contagious laugh. He just happened to have been born with no legs.
Read his story. One Book - One Bozeman 2010.
What is One Book – One Bozeman? One Book - One Bozeman is a community-wide read program to promote community building and literacy through reading a common book. Under the auspices of a program designed by the Library of Congress, cities and towns across America launched community-wide read programs starting over a decade ago.
After a successful 2009 combining of MSU Summer Reading/Freshman Convocation programs and One Book – One Bozeman, we have decided to continue the efforts and make these events a seamless 2010 venture. You can find more information about MSU’s program at Montana State University Convocation http://www.montana.edu/convocation/.
Is One Book – One Bozeman a reading program or an event? In fact, it is both. Take time this summer to read the book. Then, in September we will host a series of activities throughout the community to learn more about issues raised in the book, meet one another, and learn about amazing people in our own community. Having 2300 new freshmen participate in a community-wide read program will be a wonderful way for the Bozeman community to welcome them as they start college.
What’s In It For Me? Kevin Connolly writes a very compelling book about how he is perceived and treated both at home in Montana and across the globe. This is a story about taking life at its face value and finding success. His personal stories are riveting and provide a wealth of topics for the community to embrace and discuss. Through vigorous debate, the investigation of important issues, and getting to know one another, you can help create a sense of community here in the last best place.
Where Can I Find the Book? The Bozeman Public Library has over 30 copies and two book club kits available for check-out. Also check local booksellers, the MSU Bookstore and Renne Library.
Who is organizing One Book – One Bozeman? Community partners, including the Bozeman Public Library and Library Foundation and Library Friends, MSU and Friends of the Renne Library, Bozeman School District, Bozeman Schools Foundation, Bozeman Daily Chronicle, ColorWorld Printers, Starky’s Authentic Deli, Grizzly Longboards, SCS Unlimited, Sola Café, and others, as well as a group of volunteers is again working on a vigorous agenda of programs, book discussions, an art contest, and much more throughout the month of September. Contact Paula at the Library Foundation at 582-2426 or director@bozemanlibraryfoundation.org if you’d like to get involved or for more information.
